There are the expected jump scares, but they’re just appetizers for what happens after they goose us. The metaphors for drowning are evident, but there are also visions of zombie-like creatures and the sea witch itself. Though this isn’t very gory, the intensity level is impressive in the haunting scenes, so much so that, at one point, I caught myself watching through my fingers. The sound design also deserves mention, because a haunted house is only as good as its noises, creaks, and moans. For the first 20 minutes, His House plays less like a supernatural horror and more like a grounded human drama, telling the plight of a Sudanese family seeking asylum in the UK.

It also makes us consider our desire for retribution, then upends it with an act which shows that we are outsiders who will never fully comprehend neither the shared pain of the Majurs nor what they were willing to do for survival and for love. We are left with the sobering notion that trauma will always occupy a room in the houses our psyches build. To not acknowledge its presence only makes it bang harder on the walls.

Bol and Rial tell him they have chosen to stay and make it their new home. They say Rial killed the witch that haunted them, which Mark finds funny. Bol says they decided to live with the ghosts of their past from South Sudan, including Nyagak. Simpson asked the California Supreme Court to overturn the judgment, arguing that he had been denied the right to confront evidence and witnesses in the civil trial. The Goldman family can file a claim against Simpson’s estate in an effort to extract some funds, but it’s not clear how much they could ultimately receive, said Elizabeth Bawden, an adjunct professor at UCLA School of Law who specializes in estate planning.
Review: In ‘Housekeeping for Beginners,’ a makeshift family evokes universal pain
He combines elements that are fresh and others that are familiar to create both a humanising story of immigration and an unsettling, old-fashioned tale of a haunting, neatly oscillating between the two. It’s a confident and compelling statement of intent from a young, ambitious film-maker and it’s no surprise that Netflix sneaked in before Sundance kicked off to buy the rights. One of the best debuts of the year, Remi Weekes’ shrewd, tender, and sometimes terrifying “His House” begins with a clever premise — the immigrant experience as a horror movie — and expands on that idea in knowing and unexpected ways. Setting his film in an unspecified part of England, Weekes makes life for the couple as scary out of the house as it is inside. Their brief encounters with the outside world are mostly harsh and unforgiving, from open to casual racism, making any sort of adjustment seem impossible. But Weekes also avoids leaning into caricature, especially with Matt Smith’s empathetic housing officer who could have so easily been painted as a villain.

“One of the good ones” is uttered multiple times in “His House,” giving the sense that this type of microaggression will be at the forefront of the film’s haunting. But Weekes relegates it to the background, keeping it in the corners of reality rather than informing the supernatural. Instead, these ghosts are symbolic stowaways on the migration. Their refusal to go back from whence they came is as adamant as Bol’s yearning to stay in England. Unlike him, they do offer a scenario for their acquiescence. A civil court jury in 1997 found Simpson liable for the deaths of his ex-wife and her friend and ordered the former football star to pay their families more than $33 million.

They named him Chico and found a foster parent for him in Palos Verdes.
Although it appears that they have made remarkable progress, it doesn’t mean that they have completely forgotten their past. Nyagak and every other person they have lost in South Sudan and on their way to England will now forever be part of their memories. The film opens with Bol (Sope Dirisu) making his way across a desert with Nyagak (Malaika Wakoli-Abigaba) in his arms. They and Bol’s wife Rial (Wunmi Mosaku) get on a truck on their way to leave war-torn South Sudan. While they are on a boat traveling to Europe, several passengers, including Nyagak, drown. After Bol and Rial finally reach England, they are kept at a detention camp for a prolonged period.

Each home is staffed with nurturing caregivers who make every effort to create a beautiful, cozy home where children feel safe and loved. The film ends with Mark and two of his colleagues visiting Bol and Rial at their home. They have completely embraced their lives in London, which surprises Mark.
